English Halle Berry and her sons are hiding in the middle of the woods from an evil that can hide behind any tree. But it gets a little more complicated than that, as danger can come from elsewhere. Alexandre Aja delivers a fairly atmospheric horror film with some fine scares and a chilling atmosphere, but it is tripped up by a screenplay that tries to play it on all sides and keep the audience guessing for so long that it becomes tiresome. English Everything is pretty much the same, Alexandre Aja continues to waste his talent on contrived scripts. The absurd premise predictably evolves towards a single meaningful non-absurd denouement. This then arrives, relatively timely, so that for a while the film seems to build to a rather chilling ending on top of it. But instead of a hard-hitting finale, there's a tiresome attempt to question that meaning once or twice more. Overall, it's certainly watchable, with fine acting and a few functional horror scenes, but don't expect a true genre event. ()
