Biography

Zdeněk Zaoral (1945-1996), a screenwriter and director, graduated from FAMU. He shot his first films during his studies, i.e. mostly music-related films. First he worked at Barrandov studios, then went freelance. He was also a part-timer at FAMU. He was known primarily as a film theorist and journalist, e.g. he wrote film reviews for Film and Time magazine. He later debuted with a feature drama about drug addiction called Spider Web (Pavučina, 1986), then he directed the film Pilgrims (Poutníci, 1988) from the theatre environment.
