Biography
TOM SELLECK's versatility in both television and film has won the attention of audiences and critics worldwide. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of „Tom Magnum‟ in the eighties television hit “Magnum P.I.,” which garnered him both an Emmy® Award and a Golden Globe® Award for „Best Actor in a Drama Series,‟ as well as four People's Choice Awards, four Emmy® nominations and six Golden Globe® nominations for this role.
Although Selleck is a television icon who still maintains a strong fan base that dates back to “Magnum PI,” he has also established a contemporary audience that he acquired from the success of his Emmy® Award-nominated role in the “Jesse Stone” movie of the week franchise, which began airing four years ago on CBS. Selleck plays the part of „Jesse Stone,‟ a New England police chief investigating a string of murders.
During 2007-2008, Selleck became a series regular on NBC's hit television show “Las Vegas” alongside Josh Duhamel and Molly Simms.
In 2006, Selleck had the recurring role of „Ivan Tiggs,‟ on David E. Kelley's Emmy® Award-winning ABC television drama series “Boston Legal.”
In TNT's “Louis L'Amour's Crossfire Trail,” which aired in 2001, Selleck starred as „Rafe Covington.‟ This film set a new record for being the highest rated movie in the history of basic cable.
Selleck guest-starred in nine episodes of NBC's critically acclaimed show “Friends” during the years of 1996-2000. Selleck's portrayal of „Dr. Richard Burke,‟ „Monica's‟ (Courtney Cox) boyfriend, gained him an Emmy® nomination for „Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series‟ in 2000.
Other notable television credits include: CBS's “Twelve Mile Road” (2003), “The Closer” (1998) and “Shadow Riders” (1982); ABC's “Divorce Wars” (1982); Showtime's “Ruby Jean and Joe” (1996); TNT's “Broken Trust” (1995) and “Last Stand at Saber River” (1997); NBC‟s “Returning Home” (1975); Turner Film's “Running Mates” (2000); and A&E's “IKE: Countdown to D-Day” (2004).
In addition to television, Selleck's motion picture acting career has shown him in a variety of roles. In 1987, Selleck starred opposite Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg in THREE MEN AND A BABY, a box office success which established Selleck's success in film. In 1990, Selleck returned to the silver screen in the film's sequel THREE MEN AND A LITTLE LADY.
Also in 1990, Selleck starred in MGM-Pathe's motion picture QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER, where he portrayed an American cowboy in Australia. Other film credits include: Paramount Pictures' IN AND OUT (1997), Universal Studios' MR. BASEBALL (1992), Warner Bros.' HER ALIBI (1989), DreamWorks' THE LOVE LETTER (1999) and BROKEN TRUST (1995), Penta/America and 20th Century Fox's FOLKS (1992), Hollywood Pictures' AN INNOCENT MAN (1989), TriStar Pictures' RUNAWAY (1984) and Golden Harvest and Warner Bros.' HIGH ROAD TO CHINA (1983).
Making his Broadway debut in 2001, Selleck played „Murray Burns,‟ a cheerful eccentric raising his nephew, a twelve year- middle age kid, in New York City, in the romantic comedy A Thousand Clowns, at New York's Longacre Theatre.
Aside from his acting successes, Selleck has also become prolific behind-the-scenes. He has executive produced each installment of the “Jesse Stone” series. Selleck also co-wrote the screenplays for both “Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise” and “Jesse Stone: No Remorse” with J.T. Allen and Michael Brandman. Additionally, Selleck not only starred in, but also executive produced “Monte Walsh,” a two- and-a-half hour television movie for TNT, which was the highest rated Friday night movie on basic cable in 2003. Other notable executive producer credits include: “The Closer” (2001), “Louis L'Amour's Crossfire Trail” (2001), “Last Stand at Saber River” (1997), “Ruby Jean and Joe” (1996), “Revealing Evidence: Stalking the Honolulu Stranger” (1990) and “Magnum P.I.” during the last two seasons.
