Biography

João Canijo (1958, Lisbon) is one of the most prominent Portuguese filmmakers of his generation. From 1980 to 1985 he worked as an assistant director to Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Alain Tanner. His debut movie Três menos eu (1985) was screened at the Rotterdam Film Festival. The movies Ganhar a vida (2000) and Noite escura (2003) participated in Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and Mal nascida (2007) was screened in Venice. His filmography also includes the documentary Fantasía lusitana (2010) and other movies.
