Biography

In 1972, Isamu Hirabayashi was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from the Department of Visual Communication Design at Musashino Art University, he entered Light Publicity Co.Ltd and became a graphic designer. After leaving the advertising production company, Isamu became a freelance film director and worked on the production of numerous commercials in Japan. After 2002, while working on commercials, he set out to also produce short films. In 2003, his film Textism won the Grand Prix at the Image Forum Festival. He also won the Grand Prix at the Thai Short Film Festival with the film Helmut. A few years later, in 2006, his film, Doron, won the Grand Prix at the Busan Asian Short Film Festival as well as at the Granada Short Film Festival. In 2008, at the Locarno International Film Festival, his film Babin won both the Film and Video Subtitling Prize and the Prize Cinema e Giovent.
