Yash Pal Suri arrived in Britain in the mid sixties as a young doctor, hoping to gain further qualifications and return home to India a few years later. A few years however soon turned into many. Uniquely, he meticulously documented his changing experiences of emigration in the form of Super 8 movies and audio commentaries which he would send to his relatives back in India. They in turn would respond with their own cineletters, prompting Yash to tell more about his life abroad. As time progressed and the return which had once been so imminent became an increasingly remote possibility, the shared joy and curiosity of the early exchanges gives way to the darker reality of Yash’s self-imposed exile. Although Safar is a film made by a daughter about her father, it is not an intimate family portrait which focuses on this relationship. Safar is a tale of the Asian Diaspora. It is the story of one man’s dream to resettle in his native India over a period of almost 40 years in England. (DOK.fest München)
