This is the story of Sonya Kovalevsky, the world's first professor of mathematics at Stockholm University to which she was called from her native land Russia. She arrived during an intense and dynamic period - Sweden of the 1880s. The man she loves is a scientist and a fellow countryman, Maxim Kovalevsky. In her he seeks the free and emancipated woman. She finds that his dream of her means enchainment. He is willing to give her everything - a life together, marriage, the future. But not love. With diabolic logic they destroy what could have become their personal happiness. After a final meeting with Maxim, a feverish Sonya retu rns to Stockholm, suffering from a neglected case of pneumonia. She dies, leaving behind a daughter very much alone.
