After witnessing a gangland execution Frank goes into hiding, while his wife, Eleanor (Sheridan), and the cops go on a wild chase around San Francisco before Frank is silenced by the mob. Eleanor is certain she’ll lead them to her husband, whose testimony against the killer could bring down a crime kingpin. But Eleanor and her Frank are separated – she never wants to see him again. When roguish newspaperman Danny Legget (Dennis O’Keefe, T-Men, Raw Deal) charms Eleanor into helping him track down the hidden husband – there are unexpected, stunning, and poignant results. English Enormously attractive, fully-fledged action (we are constantly moving forward, there are no superfluous scenes that break narrative coherence) that strikingly evokes curiosity and suspense by making the viewer the only fully-informed player throughout, while the characters approach the target, the escaped Frank, first in parallel, then converging impressively to a final point of revelation and explanation. All this is interspersed with humour (great dialogue shoot-outs) and extremely clever direction, which, in the "Hitchcock" way, doesn't let us peek under the hood (the final duel of who's who), but makes our imagination work and take the tension to much higher spheres... 85% ()
