After the defeat of the War of Liberty in 1848-49 a Gypsy private called Józsi Patikárius saves the life of a wounded Habsburg archduke on the battlefield, and on their being attacked by bandits, the archduke saves his life. The Duke has the Gypsies settled down around his castle. He seduces Józsi's love, Zerfi, who dies when giving birth to the Duke's daughter. Józsi wanders from home with the child. Years later, the Duke adopts his grandson Tári. Tári and the Duke's niece Josephine fall in love, and their child Joka is raised by Tanti as a prince. In 1944 Joka and his mother are dragged away by arrow-cross men. In the camp they meet Tári, who works as a doctor.
