Oliver Cromwell (Richard Harris), an Anglican Puritan, has two missions in life: to wipe out England's rampant corruption and keep the country free from the influence of Catholicism. Rising through the ranks of Parliament, the Grand Protector takes on the weak-willed King Charles I (Alec Guinness) through a series of conflicts ranging from the English persecution of Irish Catholics to the raising of monies needed to fight the advancing Scot army. Events come to a head, however, in a sweeping battle between the Grand Protector's Roundheads and the King's Cavaliers, resulting in Cromwell's being the only man in English history to ever execute a king.
