The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism AKA Blood Demon presents us with a grisly tale of death and horror in a bizarrely original take on the vampire myth. After being executed for the murder of twelve women, Count Regula (Christopher Lee) returns from the grave to wreak his terrible revenge on society in this full-on, late-60s West German shocker. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Pit and the Pendulum' it combines torture, sensationalism, and green-blooded man-servants in a weirdly affecting grand guignol-style presentation, dripping with vibrant colour and gothic atmosphere. Hammer meets Saw meets Vinnetou. ()
The West German movie The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism is an example of how the movie's makers wanted to break out of making movies based on Karl May's books and produce works based on other classics. However, how they failed. The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism is a movie that does not work. It is supposed to be a horror movie. However, it is not really for horror fans. It is supposed to be a movie for everyone. However, it does not seem to be for anyone in particular, and there is plenty that most people would not like about it. It is not too surprising that Harald Reinl did not make more movies like this. ()
