Anna (Kjersti Lid Gullvåg) lives with her father Karl (Thor-Inge Gullvåg) in a sparsely-populated part of Northern Norway. Years ago Karl killed his previous wife and threw her newborn dark-skinned child into the ocean, in a rage over her apparent infidelity. Now he is haunted by her ghost and drinks himself senseless. Anna yearns for a husband, but there aren't many to choose from out there at the mouth of the fjord - until it turns out that another little family lives on the other side of the mountain: An alcoholic widow Karls age, her son Peder (Eirik Junge Eliassen), and her black adopted son Ante (Kingsford Siayor), who drifted home to her, out of the blue.
