The tyrannical king is afraid of his people. He can only find peace if everyone wishes him well when he sneezes. Catchpoles raid the country and give orders what the king wants. The shepherd denies obeying, he keeps on mentioning his due payments not received for seven years. He is imprisoned in the royal palace where he meets the princess who visits him in disguise. With the help of the princess the shepherd outwits everyone. When, as a final solution he is about to be cast into the bottomless well, courtiers fall in despair, because they hid their stolen goods there. Following the song of the whistle the whole court jumps into the well. The shepherd goes home with the princess, but first he puts up a board at the border: tyranny is over.
