English This television play, which today holds significance primarily due to its prominent cast, portrays the ideals of the Czech Middle Ages as conceived during the National Revival. The nobility and wisdom of Martin Růžek radiate directly from his eyes. Jiří Adamíra as the Pope's envoy is appropriately disdainful, embodying a somewhat nationalistic view of distant Czech history. It somewhat resembles Vávra's Hussite trilogy in its sparse television studio settings. Overall impression: 50%. ()

English "In the Czech Republic, everyone is right. That's the custom here." The demonstration of the magnificent acting performed by all the participants makes Smrt císaře a krále Karla IV. more than just a television production. How much its plot is or is not true to history can be debated at length, of course, but I think that in this case it is mainly about the idea, or rather the ideas that the script presents - and there are many of them. Rather, we should be concerned with those ideas. ()
