The story is set in the deep south of the 1930's, 13 year old Joel Samson arrives at a downtrodden plantation to reunite with the father who hasn't seen him for nine years. Once there, Joel is met by the frustrated mistress of the house and his rather strange cousin who eventually becomes his best friend. While discovering his new home, family secrets, and a paralyzed man in the attic of the old mansion, Joel begins to slowly mature against the background of his environment. Strangely though, his dad seems to be absent and distant throughout his whole life. (official distributor synopsis)
