1790, the county of Szerém. Hajnóczy József, a democrat and a reformer is deprived of his position as vice-steward of the county because he is not born a nobleman. 1794, Buda. Hajnóczy is involved in the Jacobite conspiracy headed by Martinovics and is in love with Lotte, the daughter of the book-trader Kohlmayer. Lotte is also courted by the actor Sehy who wishes to make a quick career as an informer. His pieces of information are forwarded to the imperial secret service by Martineau Mária. The singer evokes in the abbot the passion he had once felt for her, and the imperial court, helped by Martinovics's weakness, manages to uproot the movement. The imprisoned Hajnóczy refuses to sign the petition for remission in spite of Lottes's imploring. The Hungarian Jacobites are executed. The next day Lotte, dressed in black, and her father, find blooming rose-bushes on the Generalis field; the silent nation sends its message. (official distributor synopsis)
