In 16th century Rome, Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison) commissions Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo refuses and tries to flee Rome, but is eventually forced to undertake the work by Julius.
