The Go Master tells the life of a notable man born in China but living in Japan for most of his life. This story shows the troubled relations between Japan and China in the 20th century, with the Japanese colonization of Manchuria and invasion of China in the thirties, the Pacific War in the forties, and the Cold War in the fifties, and presents the complex interior life of the main character, the best Go player –similar to chess- that has ever existed.
