Years before he exorcises the devil from Regan McNeil, Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgård) encounters true evil in Paul Schrader's prequel to the 1973 horror classic. When his faith dries up, Merrin leaves the priesthood, heads to Africa as an archaeologist and unearths a perfectly preserved ancient church. "Under the Dominion of Evil" is a film that has a building atmosphere and there are moments that can please the soul of a horror viewer, but overall, it's too straightforward and it tries too hard to create a stepping stone for "The Exorcist". Stellan saves it with his acting and personality, but this film still doesn't reach beyond average. It lacks the necessary intensity and strength of characters.
