Historical epic that covers the early life of the legendary Mongolian leader Genghis Khan (Tadanobu Asano). The first part of a planned trilogy, the film focuses on the future ruler's brutal childhood, as he suffers starvation and slavery, through to the battle that would cement his power. Inspired by a poem translated from the Chinese that supposedly tells of Khan's formative years, director Sergei Bodrov offers a multidimensional portrait of the conqueror, focusing on the deep relationship he had with his beloved Borte (Khulan Chuluun) who was not only his wife but his most trusted advisor. English Mongol is a well-cast and visually beautiful epic shot in stunning Kazakh and Chinese locations. Unfortunately, however, its script makes only a bit more sense and is slightly more consistent and engaging than that of Emmerich’s recent 10,000 BC. A pity. ()

English Surprisingly, it has amazing visuals, it's just a shame about the very crappy script. It's not so much that it doesn't stick too closely to historical facts, but rather that it has nothing to offer. Too little plot and the often ridiculous idealization of the main character makes the film stumble pretty bad. But it's quite nice to watch. ()

English Again a piece of history this time from Mongolia. The film beautifully captures the life of the Mongols from children to adults and the birth of their greatest warlord Genghis Khan. Filmed believably, there is surprisingly enough action and blood, the pacing is decent and on the plus side it is a revenge drama, my favourite sub-genre. 80%. ()
