City-dwellers Signe and Tommy Kongsted move to the country with their 7-year old daughter Bianca. They buy an old, charming house in the little town of Glamstrup where they hope to begin a new and tranquil life. But as soon as they move in, inexplicable things start to happen: food starts to rot as soon as it's carried into another room, strange marks appear on the door and a cat keeps reappearing and disappearing in the house. Bianca settles in immediately but soon begins to play with an imaginary boy called Oliver. Although the parents cannot see Oliver, Bianca obstinately claims that he is present in the house.
Tommy is a travelling computer consultant and Signe is presently unemployed. As Tommy falls back into his busy work schedule, Signe soon finds herself home alone with Bianca and they quickly fall victim to the paranormal disturbances. One night Signe hears loud, angry voices arguing from downstairs, but a closer inspection of the house reveals no sign of uninvited guests. Troubled by these voices she calls the police and soon comes to learn of a tragic accident that took place three years ago, where a teenage girl and her younger brother died in a mysterious fire. Although this incident took place on the other side of town, the young boy bears a clear resemblance to Bianca's friend, Oliver.
Signe and Tommy find friendship and support in their new neighbours, David and Marianne. But as the mysterious disruptions worsen Signe decides to hire a clairvoyant. The clairvoyant confirms the house is haunted and during a subsequent séance he makes an attempt to drive the spirits out of the house. But the following morning Bianca's nowhere to be found and Signe's fears and suspicions resurface. During Bianca's disappearance, a young, teenage girl, Sara, shows up at the door. She's there to apply for the nanny position that Signe advertised in the local paper. Signe tells her that Bianca's gone missing and she offers to help find her. Soon enough, Sara returns with Bianca, safe and unharmed. Sara gets the job and swiftly settles in with the family. Not only has the family fallen for Sara's charms but David, the neighbour, seems very interested and the feeling is mutual.
David and Sara's attraction lead to a train of events that stir the mystical phenomenon into a burning revelation. Signe's suspicions are confirmed, that the mysterious fire was in reality a camouflaged murder. But she doesn't know that the culprit is someone close to her. (official distributor synopsis)
