What can you do when the whole world hates rats, and your best friend, Halvorsen, is a pet rat? Svein discovers that the world does not at all hold rats in high regard, and makes it his mission to convert people into finding rats both cute and cool. In his opinion, it's extremely narrowminded of the world to only appreciate cats and dogs. Rats, as well as snakes and pigs, surely make just as wonderful pets? Svein tries to make his buddy Dan with his rat James Bond to join him in the battle, but Dan proves to be reluctant. He would rather continue his research on their common project; to make rats laugh. He is totally convinced that they are able to. Svein is left alone with his project, and everything looks gloomy, when Melissa, the new girl in class, suggests that Svein and Halvorsen join the annual pet contest.

Thereby, they could show everyone how fantastic rats can be. Svein starts training Halvorsen rigorously to get him in shape, but rats are like most pets; experts at making mischief. After a while, this causes problems for Svein and his case. Both teachers, the headmaster, hospital directors and his own parents have soon had enough of Svein and Halvorsen's tricks, and gradually it becomes obvious that not only the contest is at stake, but also his friendship with Dan and Melissa. And what will happen to Halvorsen? Will Svein's parents return him to the pet shop, like they have threatened to do? (official distributor synopsis)
