Dracula Untold

While the latest film adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic novel offers a new perspective on one of horror's most famous monsters, the result is another mediocre American-made audio-visual spectacle that benefits from the casting of Luke Evans in the lead role, but loses on the story level. In short, a one-off that neither impresses nor offends, yet neither scares, which was perhaps a bit of a shame. (29/01/2015)

Whether the new Dark Universe works or not, this initiative has created another enjoyable Dracula. Which in and of itself is very pleasant. This time in a 21st-century version with the Untold moniker. Honestly, whatever substance Luke Evans reaches for, it's more or less certain that a portion of the (female) audience will be satisfied just by the fact that Evans doesn't get off the screen. And if his protagonist is a romantic (anti)hero, then everything else is just icing on the cake. This is how the new Dracula works almost flawlessly. Anyone who wants something different can choose any other version from the countless adaptations that have been made throughout the 20th century. I was pleased with it. (18/11/2019)

If the film "Dracula: Unknown Legend" is the beginning of a new monster universe, I'm afraid that this whole project will fail before it even takes off. The film had some revenue, but maybe only because vampires still have a following. However, the film itself is incredibly exhausting, easily predictable, and basically lacks moments that could captivate you. If they had tried another adaptation instead of a similar mess, maybe it would have turned out better. But maybe, just maybe. (10/11/2014)

Dracula Untold is a silly but entertaining flick kept afloat by the well-cast and charismatic Luke Evans. A B-movie script with simple character motivations and barely tolerable catchphrases. But the movie is well paced and playful, the emotions work and the digital effects are of sufficient quality. (20/10/2014)

He might stumble a bit amidst the Turkish intrigues, but the closer he gets to the finish line, the more stubbornly I have to cheer for the prince of darkness in his fight against everyone. Luke Evans can bare his fangs and thanks to his charisma combined with excellent (albeit modestly served) action, Dracula Untold can appear several classes more magnificent than its reasonable budget or minimal runtime would suggest. Universal's ambitions to build a connected universe were somewhat naive from the beginning, but I will always know who would have stolen the show. (22/10/2014)
