English Czech television has a long-standing tradition of adapting classic Russian short stories, typically featuring top-notch actors. This old television play is no exception, and it serves today as a historical record of the acting prowess of stars who have since passed away or whom we can no longer imagine in this form. Seeing Bořivoj Navrátil with a mane of hair is in itself unusual. The wit and subtle irony so characteristic of Gogol were perfectly conveyed in this film. Overall impression: 80%. ()
