21 Jump Street

Some really good jokes, but at the same time a lot of unfunny vulgarity and especially the much-loved awkwardness, which I simply don't understand. Rather than: "What idiots, I have to laugh at them!", I usually say to myself: "What idiots, and am I really supposed to laugh at that?" The film wants to be a cross between Hot Fuzz and (the film) Starsky and Hutch. Unfortunately, without likable main characters and with the aforementioned negatives, it couldn't succeed in my eyes. Do you remember that series from the 80s where Johnny Depp started and which actually made him famous? That series about a group of policemen who go back to school, pretend to be students and solve cases? The series "Jump Street 21" also aired on our TVs and I think it left a mark on many people. It's a classic and sometimes classics need to be revived. Jonah Hill joined as a screenwriter and he and Channing Tatum played the lead roles and also decided to produce the film. This seemingly mismatched duo turned out to be a great move. Yes, a film was made based on the original series, with new characters - mostly - and a new story. The foundation doesn't differ much. The duo of police officers goes to high school because they have to solve a crime. There are definitely differences compared to the series. The film is grittier, more profane, and I think it's also more entertaining. I laughed out loud several times, and I would say that's good proof. Some scenes are really unbelievable, only occasionally and very rarely slipping into silly humor. The bar is set quite high and the production companies should be kicked for giving up on releasing "21 Jump Street" in our cinemas, even though the premiere was originally planned. It's a pity, this comedy deserves it, not only because of nostalgia. This duo of police officers will suit you, you will laugh or at least smile, and even though you might not remember the film in a while, it will be a pleasant experience for that moment. 21 Jump Street felt to me like a mix of Bad Boys sand Never Been Kissed, with a good dose of bromance - even though it is actually a film remake of a TV series from the 1980s. The film does slip into cheap humour at times and it was clear how it would end, but I still had a good time watching it and laughed my heart out. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum portrayed the two seemingly different guys – in character and appearance – quite solidly and provided many a funny scene. Alongside the humour, the film offers decent action that keeps the viewer entertained, and a couple of unexpectedly gory scenes that in turn surprise. (27/03/2021)

I could lament the fact that the "buddy chemistry" would have worked better under a different director. However, then I remembered R's load of dirty jokes and realized that although it had its dead spots (five minutes less runtime wouldn't have been a bad thing), I roared with laughter too often to just consign it to mediocrity. The moment when he shoots off the dude's penis and then picks it up off the ground with his teeth is something you simply don't normally see. (18/05/2012)

It's pleasantly vulgar and controversial, but in terms of storyline, it's a boring and sterile affair. So, except for a few gags and several solid jokes, it's nothing but a blend of unusual situations and a few solid shots. Not really a comedy, nor a crime story. It's certainly unconventional, but it didn't really entertain me that much. The chemistry was slightly lacking. (23/11/2012)
