Blanca Bravo is a tough, idealistic young policewoman trained at the National Police Academy in Mexico City. She has been assigned to Ciudad Juárez, a gritty frontier town just over the U.S. border and the site of multiple international factories...virtually in America's backyard! Young women are disappearing at an alarming rate, most of them poor migrant factory workers. Some are found weeks later, dumped in the desert, murdered and mutilated, and some simply vanish. All are nameless victims of crimes that go uninvestigated by a male-dominated police force who treat them as little more that nuisance crimes. The locals whisper of a serial killer. The authorities want an arrest...the media attention is bad for the city's image and for business. Acting against the orders of her superiors, Blanca's investigation reveals something far more disturbing at work but as she threatens to expose an ugly truth about the very core of society, she runs the risk of becoming a victim herself. English This dismal crime drama condemns the horrifying amount of sexual violence committed against women in Mexico. A determined policewoman, corrupt lawyers, a naïve young couple falling in love but also succumbing to hate and self-destruction, an indifferent and corrupt governor, a radio host commenting on the local situation... The film can evoke Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic through its setting and large number of characters, but it is a purely Mexican endeavor that is not and maybe even doesn’t want to be as ferocious and exciting as American thrillers. Even with its slightly tedious and lengthy narration, however, there are some strong moments that will not leave the viewer cold. A strong three stars. ()
