Their personal motives are steeped in tragedy. Their objective is to fight tyranny in the name of freedom. Their methods are deadly and explosive. This is the untold story of one of the most notorious and feared sects of the French resistance during WWII. A tense, uncompromising portrayal of how a disparate group of outsiders, from varying nationalities, joined forces to create an unstoppable underground army. This is also the story of Missak Manouchian, an Armenian poet and self-proclaimed pacifist who is suddenly thrown into a world where violence and conflict are the only means of survival. English Army of Crime offers a glimpse of France during WWII from the perspective of the Jewish resistance in Paris, a group that pushed their luck and ultimately paid the price. It's an interesting film with some powerful ideas, especially around France's stance on Jews during the war. However, the pacing was incredibly slow, and the runtime felt like a real slog, which is a shame given the importance of the subject. This is a story that should be seen across Europe to remind us all of our shared humanity and how perilous those times were—where even the smallest remark could lead to someone’s death. I really liked the concept, but with a shorter, tighter execution, it would have been far more impactful. ()
