Moore plays Pop Webster, an old silent film actor who has been demoted to studio guard. Webster, in cahoots with telephone operator Polly Johnson (Betty Hutton), has his sailor son Jimmy (Eddie Bracken) convinced that he runs the studio. When his son receives shore leave in Los Angeles, Pop has to work hard and fast to prevent his son from finding out the truth. So well loved is Pop that virtually everyone on the studio lot is willing to help out with the charade. (official distributor synopsis)
