Comedian Chris Rock stars as Aaron, who is trying to get through his father's funeral in one piece despite the best efforts of his melodramatic mother (Loretta Devine), his baby-obsessed wife (Regina Hall) and his playboy brother (Martin Lawrence). Meanwhile, his father's secret gay lover (Peter Dinklage) turns up demanding money, and his beautiful cousin (Zoe Saldana) spends the day dodging her infatuated ex (Luke Wilson) while trying to look after her fiance (James Marsden) - who accidentally imbibed a hallucinogen while searching for a tranquiliser to calm his nerves. "Bro" took on a dry English classic and the result was... exactly as expected. Chris is fine, Zoe is extra sexy, and James is a surprising comedic talent. Danny/Russell/Roger announce "I’m too old for this shit!", but otherwise it’s a cruel, unfunny bore that drags on for fifty-eight minutes. ()
To make it clear from the beginning, I’m a fan of the original Death at a Funeral and I don’t understand whose idea it was to remake it three years later and with an annoying and raging black cast instead of elegant Brits. And I can’t understand at all why the remake did away with the humour and replaced it with cringe. There are a couple of good moments, of course (all coming from the original), so at least two stars for them. ()
I don't think American comedies will ever match British ones, but this one wasn't that big a mess. There were a lot of awkward scenes, but there were some pretty funny ones, too. One star for James Marsden, because he played the pill-popper well. And a second star for Danny Glover, the most annoying old man under the sun. ()
