The Great Christening

Harald is anxious and consequently he believes himself to be unfit to work. He just wanders around, hungry and homeless. But one day he receives food from Double Petra, who shares an apartment with Alvilde. They agree that Harald may also live with her. In return he must look after Alvilde's kid, whom she had with The Cuckoo, an unreliable sailor boy who has left her.
In his role as a nursemaid, Harald has to put up with all kinds of things. The various preachers who invade the working class homes are a real nuisance to him. But he takes care of the kid as well as any mother. Soon Alvilde discovers Harald's qualities, but Harald doesn't even dare think about Alvilde. Not before he one day meets The Cuckoo and gives him a solid beating. Suddenly it dawns on him that he is no longer anxious, but strong and healthy, and that he is perfectly able to work like everybody else, and even start a family. At Harald's and Alvilde's wedding, the kid is also baptized. The same goes for all the other illegitimate kids. The strict chaplain had kept them all away, but verger Evensen is fond of them all.
