Shocking and highly controversial at the time of release, The Snake Pit broke new ground in Hollywood cinema for its depiction of mental illness and its treatment. A powerful film about what life is like for a fool and how it is possible to reach a state of understanding and overcome one's mental problems. The film has noir elements in terms of a narrator's voice and retrospective storytelling, where we, like the protagonist herself, learn important circumstances that lead to understanding her state. Olivia de Havilland is absolutely brilliant in her role. ()
