Paulette Goddard stars as Mrs. Laura Cheveley, the femme fetale plotting to sully the reputation of distinguished politician Robert Chiltern (Hugh Williams) to spite his wife, Lady Chiltern (Diana Wynyard). Holding secret information that Chiltern's reputation and wealth was founded illicitly, Mrs. Cheveley blackmails him into a fraudulent scheme to build a canal in Argentina for her own personal gains.
