English Beyond the Monastery Door is a purely cinematic subject of practitioner Karel Špelina. The story of two brothers with different characters combines everything that Czech filmmakers could imagine as ingredients of a worldly novel. The catharsis of everything here is the will of the just deceased mother and the location of their father's lavish mansion, which is a true contrast to the poor teacher's dwelling. And it is this teacher who is at first the girlfriend of the younger brother and then the victim of the older one. Then she becomes a single mother and there is no further help for her. The younger brother loses his inheritance in the church seminary by trickery when his brother loses his share through the influence of his cronies. It is precisely due to the intrigues of the worldly Grosslichtová and the scheming Šlégl that one can visit the racetrack and the most luxurious art deco interiors. Which, together with the spicy costumes and great cars, becomes the best asset of the whole film. The lavish luxury and Štěpán Kopecký’s buildings are truly great. ()
