This epic French historical narrative is an adaptation of Matthew Lewis's canonical novel from 1796, which depicts the dramatic downfall of a charismatic preacher. Director Dominic Moll has created a visually immensely impressive drama that discusses not only religious fanaticism, but also the inability to resist bodily temptation in the face of faith. Beautiful camera work and the performances of Vincent Cassel as Capucino Ambrosio and of Déborah François as Matilda are truly remarkable. (Febiofest)
