Anna is out of control, so her mother has her committed to an asylum. The patient, convinced that she's a princess, introduces not only an unusual imitation of refined manners, but also humanity into the post-war conservative practices of the asylum for mentally disabled. The omnipresent struggle between humanity and the institutions constricted by rules is all the more complicated because, despite the monstrosity of medicinal “treatments” such as lobotomy and electric shock, the distinction between good guys and bad guys is highly ambiguous. The director, experienced primarily in the field of documentaries, made a film that excels in its inner sincerity and clarity, with the spirit of an era long gone, when even cinematography itself was refined.
