Paris, 1830. Romanticism prevails in France: it is the time of top hats, frock coats and outrageous representations of love in literature. Octave (Pete Doherty), a young man of respectable family, finds himself betrayed by his girlfriend. Afflicted, he submerges into the Parisian nightlife, guided by a nihilistic acquaintance. The situation changes when his father dies and young Octave is forced to return to the countryside, where he meets Brigitte (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a widow 10 years older, with whom he falls in love madly. English Charlotte Gainsbourg is a great actress, but I've said before that I don't like historical films. It was very evident in this case as well. It was incredibly lengthy, and incredibly uninteresting unless she was on set, and there was absolutely nothing else of interest. Shallow in plot with an attempt to convey something, but an effort that misses the mark. ()
