Jean-Luc Godard's stylish, offbeat blend of American private eye films, European science fiction, and the Orpheus myth stars Eddie Constantine as hard-boiled shamus Lemmy Caution, whose latest case has sent him to a distant world to track down-and assassinate-the creator of the super-computer that enforces the planet's sterile and morally bankrupt culture. Akim Tamiroff, Anna Karina, Howard Vernon, Jean-Pierre Leaud also star. (StudioCanal UK)

Jean-Luc Godard was such a unique creator that he infused his noir sci-fi with a great charge, and the visual aspect is excellent, even though it's essentially a contemporary world without any major inventions. But it's about how that world operates, how it's described, and what the characters say. That's definitely not a bad thing; it's just that the atmosphere struck me more than the philosophy, which I didn't expect. ()
