Two Rembrandts in the Garden

The gates of the family house close in front of Englishman Mark Atkins in Łódź, Poland, where he has traveled to search for the gold treasure his grandfather hid from the Nazis. In order to penetrate the walls of the official authorities, Atkins wages a guerilla war, armed with a pen and paper – and eventually a shovel. Director Jerzy Sladkowksi manages to stir a gripping thriller from the seemingly random material. The subtly presented human details of the film and its amazing twists reward the viewer time and again. The family's past is illustrated with funny animations. Close and distant relatives join Atkins in his quest. The treasure begins to gain metaphysical dimensions, and the story of the rabbi gives a clue about the true location of the treasure. Who will get the last laugh, from beyond the grave?
