September 8. 1866. Rózsahegy. In Szendrey Ignác's house the family gathers together to celebrate Mária's day. The father would like to isolate Júlia, sick with cancer, from her children and more from her husband, whom the whole family consider unworthy of Júlia. Petőfi István, Zoltán's teacher, turns up to announce that he will no longer take responsibility for the depraved and sick boy. István is still in love with Marika, whose husband, Gyulai Pál, loves his sister-in-law, Júlia. Suppressed emotions and controversies explode several times during the day, but the real tragedy comes at night: after terrible pains, the cholera epidemic takes Marika, as well.
