The elk is the main star of The Elk Story. Even though it is the largest cervid mammal living in the Czech Republic, very few Czechs know of its existence inside their borders. This majestic animal is able to move very quickly through the forest, which makes it quite rare to see in the wild. The elk went extinct in this region in medieval times, but its return and the first wild born babies since the middle of the last century have been documented. Nowadays there is a small number of individuals living in the remote areas of the Czech forests. But the question remains: Is there anything we can do to preserve the elk population in this country?
