Made in the final years of Studio D's existence, Sisters in the Struggle adopts the classic National Film Board style - talking heads, vérité shooting. But despite the conventional form, the film remains radical in its amplifications of the voices of Black Canadian women, who reflect on the legacy of the intersection of racism and sexism, and on personal battles they have waged in fighting white patriarchy. Most pressingly, while shot in 1991, the doc remains as timely as it was some 25 years ago. As writer and editor Lydia Ogwang said when suggesting the film, it "provides modern viewers with a rich reservoir from which to contextualize the political activism exhibited in communities of BIPOC women in Canada today."
