In 1982, two 11-year-old friends in Mississippi set out on a mission to remake their favorite movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, shot by shot. Over seven tumultuous years, the pair tested their limits and their parents' patience as they filmed "on location," using their own stunts and props. The whip-cracking hero, the gold-digging Nazis, melting corpses—all were brought to life in their own backyard in a childhood epic that's since become a cult sensation in its own right. The only thing missing in Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation was the final scene, involving the replica of a 75-foot plane that explodes into flames. Screening with the scrappy DIY masterpiece of sorts, this behind-the-scenes documentary centers on the premature auteurs—now men in their 40s—as they reunite to shoot the dramatic conclusion of their all-kid labor of love.
