What would you do if you inherited an arms factory? For Vito Alfieri Fontana – the focus of the documentary The Successor – the decision was slow in the making but with immediate moral consequences. Without grand gestures, he speaks of the mines his family built. Of the realisation about what they did. The gap between the minefields in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Italian factory is closed when we follow Fontana on one of his many travels to help the victims of mines. Together with skier Nijaz Nemic, who has lost a leg, he clears out the lethal plastic hidden underground and looks back on pivotal moments in his life. A thoughtful and poetic film about guilt, atonement – and mines. (Göteborg Film Festival)
