The collage artist Lewis Klahr has long been one of the American experimental film scene's most interesting directors, and the masterful photo fest Sixty Six constitutes a kind of apex to his fascinating work. Clearly having things in common with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein (and the Swedish drawer Jan Stenmark), he reforms the sixties' pop cultural picture bank to melancholic miniature where Marvel heroes from the society of Mad Men meet Greek tragedy. Sixty Six, which was unanimously praised at the premiere at MoMa in New York, is organized in twelve chapters. Together they comprise a unique trip to California's sun-drenched mythology, where the paper dolls of mass culture experience the dreams and nightmares of modernism. (Göteborg Film Festival)
