The Canadian documentary film Beware of Images comes with the not so surprising – yet all the more important – message that not all we see may be trusted. Especially if we stop thinking critically about what we are seeing and watching. We live in a society that is drowning in images. These images are often presented as facts and the only, true reflections of reality. And, we usually believe them until someone points out that to see with one's own eyes does not necessarily mean to understand. The director of the documentary, Sergio Toporek, warns us through image and succinct commentary how image can be used and abused to instill social differences, and what may result from the fact that we are so reliant on such an imperfect sense as sight. The author based the picture not only on meticulous socio-historical research of the role of image in human history, but on his own experience and knowledge in the field of art design as well.
