Plots(1)

There is a certain restaurant in the first basement level of a multi-tenant building in one corner of a shopping street near the office district. The historical restaurant, marked by a sign with a picture of a cat, is called "Western Cuisine Nekoya." This restaurant looks completely normal through the week, but on Saturdays, it opens in secret exclusively to some very unique guests. During these hours, doors in various areas of a parallel world open to allow customers of many different races and cultures into the restaurant. (Crunchyroll)

Season 1 (2017) (S01)

English Isekai Shokudo is not an anime series where you can sit down and binge all twelve episodes in one day. If you decide to do this, you are going to get through two or three episodes and then quit in exasperation. The biggest problem is the lack of narrative and the incredible repetitiveness, where each episode seems to be just the same as the one before it, with practically the same thing happening each time. However, what do you expect from an anime series that focuses not so much on its preparation of food, however, rather on the pleasure of eating and enjoying it? With food, to enjoy it properly you cannot go overboard and binge-eat, no, you have to eat smaller amounts more regularly. Well, that is how this anime series also works. So how do we do this? I always watched just one episode a week, and the way it worked was to make something good to eat, settle down in a nice place, and watch one episode while I ate something nice. This really worked well! For an anime series about food to appeal to me, it needs to whet my appetite, make me believe in the characters' enjoyment of eating the food, and create a pleasant atmosphere for me to enjoy the eating as well. Well, that is what Isekai Shokudo can accomplish. All of the dishes look really delicious and very tasty, and when they are eaten by likable characters and each course is properly enjoyed, I found myself enjoying my main course as much as this entire anime series. So with the right regular amounts and the right atmosphere, something that can easily put off any discerning audience member becomes a treat to look forward to each week just as much as all the characters look forward to their next visit to the Restaurant to Another World. I quite liked the animation, I enjoyed the soundtrack, and all the characters were unbelievably likable, and as for the enjoyment that I got out of it, it was just right. So for me personally, it was a very entertaining anime series suitable for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and just like with food, you should just not overdo it or you are going to feel too full and sick... 7.5/10. Season 2 (2021) (S02)

English I feel very satisfied with the second season as it delivered exactly what I expected, therefore fulfilling what I wanted it to. Basically, I do not have much to add to my review of the first season as nothing has changed. It is still endearing, sometimes a little amusing. It still works great for whetting the appetite or even helping your digestion if you choose to watch this anime series after a meal (which I cannot understand why anyone would intentionally do, though). It is still incredibly repetitive and suitable for doing a maximum of one episode a day, ideally with lunch, with the understanding that if you enjoy it for a week, you might (like me) actually look forward to a new episode. Oh, and there have been a few little surprises and little tidbits of interest in recent episodes that have delighted me, as a regular viewer with interest not only in food but also in the show’s consumers. I thought Restaurant to Another World once again fulfills its simple purpose, and the simple message that good food brings people together is one I also like a lot. 7.5/10. ()
