In the mid 30's, the magnate Jan Baťa goes on a business trip around the world. He is accompanied by the young filmmaker Alexander Hackenschmied, whose task is to document the most important moments of the journey. However, in India, Hackenschmied abandons the delegation and uses part of the film stock to shoot his own creative newsreels in India and in Ceylon. The unedited stock from this part of the expedition hadn't been worked with until 1939, after Hackenchmied left the country, when the Head of Baťa Film Production Elmar Klos edited the stock into 3 films, of which the short lm Poor People is the most socially critical. It shows the poverty of the lowest casts, overcrowded streets, fishermen fighting for their livelihood every day, and beggars who have given up, from the point of view of a European, in contrast to the houses of the privileged from high society.
