Call of Heroes thrills throughout in its tale of skilled martial artists, who take a stand to protect their village against a ruthless army. In 1914, after the collapse of China's Qing dynasty, Yang Kenan (Sean Lau Mad Detective) is appointed as guardian to defend the rural village of Pucheng. After Yang arrests the son of a sadistic warlord, Cao Shaolun (Louis Koo Flash Point), the warlord s army threatens to bring death and destruction. As the odds for peace lessen and the pressure mounts for Yang to release the murderous captive, a stirring tale of heroic resistance unfolds. (Cine Asia)

English I would love to give 4 stars, but this time I can't. Once again there are a lot of familiar faces that I always enjoy watching. The best is Jacky Wu, he plays a villain here, but is impeccable as always. Yu Xing is almost everywhere lately, he has a smaller role here, but the surprise are Eddie Peng and Ching-wan Lau. As for the story, I found it unnecessarily complicated, at times I got lost in who was bad and who was good. It also lacks any significant pacing, so I found myself bored a few times, but once the action comes in, it's something to watch. It's over-the-top, but the choreography is top notch and delightfully R-rated. I place the high point of the film in the middle, where they invade a village and fight with every possible weapon at hand. The finale is fine too, just the occasional dullness annoyed me. Hong Kong is not my cup of tea this year. 65% ()

English Perhaps the plot is a bit simplistic, and the villain is terribly dull and contrived, but this is the kind of film you want to watch for its action scenes, and they are simply breathtaking. Hong Kong shows that the most beautiful fight scenes can only come from Asia. And it works great, even with digital effects in places. ()
