An age-old tale represented in real life, Onipa'a: Protecting Mokauea Island captures the forgotten history of this tiny island caught in the crisis of development. At just a mere 10 acres, Mokauea lies in one of the most prime waters of Honolulu, neighboring the Honolulu International Airport reef runway. Historically, Mokauea was a center of Hawaiian navigation, and fishing traditions. In the early 1970’s fisherman residents faced eviction and the burning of their homes. These determined individuals stand firm in the fight for their traditions, their voice, and their homes. (Hawaii International Film Festival)
