Barry is a dark comedy starring Bill Hader as a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied in his life, he reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an aspiring actor. Barry follows his “mark” into an acting class and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theater scene. Barry wants to start a new life as an actor but his criminal past won’t let him walk away - can he find a way to balance both worlds? (South by Southwest Film Festival)

Barry Is the New Dexter. It's a long wait because it's initially too straddled between the comedic and dramatic stances, and that's reflected in Hader's performance, because even with him the two stances (downtrodden versus killer) are so far apart that they don't have many points of contact. But the creators know what they're doing, and once it clicks in the seventh episode in a way you won’t be able to get it out of your head for a long time, you suddenly know that Barry really isn't just a "wannabe something like Dexter", but that they've found a distinctive angle that's both dead-on and interesting. | S1: 4/5 |
